It is a fun, festive, and busy time for us all and even though we love to see our patients all year round we want to keep you out of the dental emergency room this holiday season. Your to-do list is long enough so Dr. Dan KnellingerDr. Stacey Verkler, and Dr. Carol Bou-Sliman have compiled a few simple dental tips to keep you and your family happy and healthy throughout the holidays.

1. Establish a Routine

Brush at least twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride tooth paste. Having a healthy hygiene routine will lay the foundation for a cavity-free smile throughout the season.

2. Have a Game Plan

Eat a balanced diet throughout the day to avoid binging on sweet treats later. Skip the sugary sodas and punches and drink water. When you can, swish with water to wash away decay-causing bacteria if you cannot brush your teeth right away.

3. Come See Us for the Holidays!

We know it is a busy time but keeping your regular maintenance cleaning with your dentist will help prevent cavities and keep your smile merry and bright come picture time.

4. You Are Not the Nutcracker

Biting down on nutshells can cause serious damage to your teeth and gums. Shell all nuts before you eat them. As excited as you are to rip open your new gift, do not use your teeth to cut tape or break ribbon. You could chip or crack a tooth requiring a root canal and crown to fix it.

5. Avoid a Dental Emergency

Do not add a dental emergency to your list of holiday festivities. Avoid chewy or sticky foods like caramel and taffy. They have been known to rip out fillings and pop off crowns at the most inconvenient times. Be patient and savor the flavor of that ribbon candy or cocktail ice. Do not bite down, as you could break a tooth.
