October is Dental Hygiene Month and many in and around Palm Harbor are taking steps to improve the overall health and hygiene of their teeth. Since improving the health of your teeth can be as easy as adding a couple steps to your daily routine, the doctors at Knellinger Dental Excellence encourage everyone to use this time to learn more about preventative dentistry in Palm Harbor, FL and revive their dental routine with these helpful tips.

Brush Up on Your Brushing Technique

Brushing your teeth may seem clear cut, however, you may not be as effective of a brusher as you think. Studies show, over 70% of Americans are affected by some form of gum disease. Not brushing the right way or skipping a day altogether can lead to bacterial growth, plaque buildup and eventually, cavities and gum disease. Here are some tips to follow that will help you brush correctly:

  • Use a soft, nylon toothbrush that is appropriately sized for your mouth
  • Hold your brush at a 45 degree angle, covering your tooth surface and gum line
  • Don’t forget the insides of your teeth and hard to reach places
  • Brush for 2 minutes at least 2-3 times a day

Additionally, make sure not to press too hard while you’re brushing, or you may hurt your gums more than help them.

Brushing Isn’t Enough

Beyond brushing, Drs. Knellinger, Verkler and Bou-Sliman advise flossing, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption and starting oral hygiene care early on. Flossing should be performed daily and you should always floss below the gumline to ensure all harmful plaque is removed. If possible, avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption which can lead to gum disease, tooth loss and even oral cancer. Parents should be mindful of their children’s’ oral care as soon as their first tooth erupts and bring them in for their first dental checkup.

Don’t Forget to Make Your Next Appointment

Even after excellent at-home dental care, you should visit your dentist every six months to help prevent cavities and gum disease. The doctors at Knellinger Dental Excellence will also perform oral cancer screenings when you come in for a checkup as well as look for things you may have missed in your daily routine.
